Excellent question. every patient heals at a different pace. The factors that affect rate of healing include the presence of a foreign body in the wound, nutritional status, and whether or not you smoke cigarettes.I cant emphasize enough how important the smoking factor is. This is an excellent question. When i was starting out i did a number of circumferential ops on patients who had lost a lot of weight. The main drawback is that the scar all the way around the body does not look good, and so I only recommend this for patients who have significant skin redundancy ( layers and layers of skin).
