It is difficult to assess your individual results without before and after photographs. However, Juvederm Voluma is too thick a filler to be used in the lips or peri-oral area. If the lips have swollen and have a burning sensation a number of months following placement, it is best to have this assessed with the original injector as this is an unusual side effect. It may be something called ‘delayed onset hypersensitivity’ which is a rare complication which can set in months after the original placement. It’s very common for lips to still be swollen 24 hours following treatment, and as swelling can be asymmetrical, it is too early to tell if the asymmetry is due to the swelling or fillers. Juvederm also takes up to 4 weeks to integrate into the tissues, so it is normal to ‘feel’ the filler within the lip within this period. It’s best to book in for a review of your lips with the original injector in 2-4 weeks time when a more accurate assessment of the results can be made.

Lips have a large number of blood vessels, so they tend to be a region which can bruise more commonly than other areas of the face. Although it can be a worry, this bruise does not look sinister and should get better by the day. Avoid activities which will make the blood vessels dilate such as exercise, saunas or steam rooms and drinking alcohol, and apply a cold compress when you can.
