If a band patient cannot tolerate solid food, it is a slippage until proven otherwise. I would do liquids and protein shakes only and see your band surgeon ASAP.

It sounds very concerning for a slipped band and you should see your surgeon asap. If cant see him for some reason, then an ER where bariatric surgery is being done is recommended.

Is ok to have the ds 4 years later after the gastric sleeve?
Duodenal Switch after failed sleeve
Sep 30, 2017
Sep 30, 2017
DS is a good option for inadequate weight loss or weight regain after gastric sleeve. I only offer this option in highly compliant patients as the consequences of non-compliance after the DS is severe vitamin/mineral deficienies that can lead to permanent disabilities. There is a lot of upkeep with the DS so you need to really do your research before making this decision.
Good luck!

Which balloon is best?
Orbera vs ReShape
Sep 30, 2017
Sep 30, 2017
Both balloons are safe and effective for weight loss. There have been some preliminary studies that suggest ReShape has less side effects and a decreased percentage of early removal due to intolerance. I currently offer both balloons and let patients decide which one fits them best. Hope this helps!

Gastric balloons in the US are FDA approved for only 6 months duration. Beyond that time frame, there is an increased risk for deflation with migration into the intestines. This could potentially cause an intestinal obstruction requiring surgery to repair. The European Union has recently approved Orbera365 for 12 months use but it isn’t available in the US yet.

Laura,
It sounds like your band is too tight. It’s either because the band was adjusted too tight or your band has slipped. To me, it’s a slippage til proven otherwise. You need to get back in with your surgeon for evaluation.
Good Luck!

Anna,
You probably have a “stricture” or narrowing at the connection between your new stomach pouch and the intestines. It is a known complication after gastric bypass and must be ruled out if a patient can not tolerate solids in the first few months after surgery. Contact your surgeons office and they should arrange for a GI doctor to stretch the openning for you. It is a pretty simple outpatient procedure. In the meantime, push your fluids…
