Results of Hernia CT Scan. Doc on vacation for 2 weeks. Does it look like surgery is likely?
Gastric bypass and hiatal hernias
Mar 19, 2016
Mar 19, 2016
In this situation, the hiatal hernia should be repaired and reinforced with bio-absorbable mesh especially if you are having symptoms like nausea, pain, vomiting and food regurgitation. Best, Dr Darido
When you have tried everything, what is another solution to losing weight?
Weight loss solutions
Mar 9, 2016
Mar 9, 2016
Most people assume that weight loss solutions revolve around the concept of eat less and move more. Our understanding of obesity and metabolism has greatly evolved over the past few years and we now know that decreasing calorie intake by itself is not an effective solution for weight loss. It is common sense to assume that by eating less and exercising more one would expect to loose weight. The reality is different. Weight is tightly controlled by several hormones secreted by different…
60 lbs gained after gastric bypass
Weight gain 3 years after gastric bypass
Mar 5, 2016
Mar 5, 2016
Maintaining your weight after gastric bypass largely depends on a healthy lifestyle including daily exercise and a lean diet. Anxiety, stress and depression, unfortunately, can sabotage your attempts at maintaining a healthy weight after gastric bypass. Depression medications cause significant weight gain. Using comfort food to cope with stress is another cause of weight regain. Starvation is never a permanent solution for weight loss. A better approach is to change the quality of calories…
Follow-up: Moderate Hiatal Hernia post gastric bypass. Will they close the hernia?
Gastric bypass, difficulty swallowing, hiatal hernia and GERD
Mar 2, 2016
Mar 2, 2016
A formal work up is needed in this case and a barium swallow is not enough. An upper endoscopy to check for inflammation, ulceration and possible stricture of the distal esophagus and gastric pouch outlet is a must. Examined the length of the Roux limb must be performed using CT scan or other diagnostic modalities as a short Roux limb is the main cause of reflux in the setting of gastric bypass. A hiatal hernia repair by itself for a gastric bypass case offers minimal benefit in terms of…
I am a 23yr female, who weighs 406 lbs, no serious health issues, Bypass or Sleeve ?
Sleeve or Bypass
Mar 2, 2016
Mar 2, 2016
Both procedures are great weight loss solutions. Gastric bypass is slightly more effective but a bit more invasive with potential longterm complications like marginal ulcers and internal hernias. The gastric sleeve if properly performed, and I insist on properly performed, can lead to great weight loss results with minimal side effects. Good luck, Dr Darido
Post Gastric RNY Patient needing hiatal hernia surgery with questions.
Hiatal Hernia After Gastric Bypass
Mar 1, 2016
Mar 1, 2016
An asymptomatic hiatal hernia after gastric bypass needs no repair. Most hiatal hernia after gastric bypass surgery are asymptomatic. You are right, the stomach can no longer be wrapped around the esophagus after gastric bypass. if you are suffering from acid reflux after gastric bypass surgery you may have a short Roux limb causing it rather than a hiatal hernia. Warm Regards, Dr Darido.
Is gastric bypass surgery necessary for my Hernia Repair?
Recurrent ventral hernia, obesity and diabetes
Feb 10, 2016
Feb 10, 2016
Excess weight and diabetes are major risk factors for ventral hernia recurrence after repair. Bariatric surgery in the form of gastric sleeve or gastric bypass is an ideal treatment for obesity and diabetes prior to ventral hernia repair. I typically repair the hernia one year after weight loss surgery rather than at the same time. The success rate and safety of surgery are much higher after 100 lbs weight loss. The recurrence rate of ventral hernia is much lower after loosing 100 lbs of…
