Congratulations on your decision to become healthier!
Many insurance companies require 3,6,9 and even 12 mo waiting periods. No evidence exists that this waiting period will improve your outcome. It is simply a way for them to slow the process delay the provision of insurance claims. If you have coverage wait and follow their guidelines.
I can’t recommend going to Mexico as any complications will not be covered by your insurance. Our…
Gastric sleeve. How do I even begin this process? And how do I know if my insurance will cover it?
Getting Started
May 12, 2017
You are a candidate for Sleeve Gastrectomy! You can contact your insurance company and ask them if you have coverage. You can specifically request coverage for CPT code 43775 (laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy). Be specific and ask them to show you the page in your policy that pertains to Bariatric Surgery. Next locate a surgeon as close to home as possible that is verified by MBSAQIP. This would indicate the surgeon is an expert and the hospital in which the surgeon…
Opinion on best weight loss surgery. I think a sleeve is my best choice. How long does it normally
Goal weight and Tummy Tuck
May 12, 2017
Most patients lose to goal weight in 12 months. Many patients continue to lose weight for an additional 6 months however at a much slower pace.
I would recommend waiting 18 months after surgery to consider body contouring surgery.
At this time your weight will be stable and you also have a very good nutritional status to undergo that type of procedure.
Does insurance pay for the gastro surgery?
Insurance

Many insurance policies cover Bariatric Surgery.
You need to contact your insurance company and ask if you have benefits.
Be specific. Ask for them to show you the page and paragraph in your policy that pertains to Bariatric Surgery.
Your health will no doubt improve if you have this procedure.
I am going to a 6 month management program for insurance before the sleeve. If I go under 35 BMI,
Insurance Requirements
May 12, 2017
This is an ongoing issue with insurance companies. It varies State to State and policy to policy.
In 20 years I haven’t seen a patient denied for coverage if they have an immediate pre op BMI of less than 40 or 35 with co morbid condition (diabetes, high blood pressure etc.) as long as the initial consult BMI was at least 40 or 35 with co morbid conditions.
FACT: There is no evidence that a one, three, six, or even nine month waiting period prior to surgery improves…
Is ok to have the ds 4 years later after the gastric sleeve?
DS 4 years after sleeve

Duodenal Switch is a great choice for revisional surgery after sleeve gastrectomy.
This can be done laparoscopically. This requires usually one night stay after surgery, and the return to work will be about the same as your sleeve.
Can I have the Gastric Balloon 10 years post RNY bypass?
Gastric Balloon after RNY
May 5, 2017
Great question.
Unfortunately previous gastric surgery is a contraindication for placement of intra gastric balloon including Orbera.
Most fully accreditted Bariatric Surgery centers will provide methods (surgical and medical) for weight regain after primary surgery. Obesity is a chronic disease and often requires lifelong treatment measures.
Good luck and good health
