I’m 21 years old, 6’2″ and 295 lbs. Do I make a good candidate for gastric bypass or sleeve
Candidacy for Bariatric Surgery
Oct 1, 2021
Oct 1, 2021
The answer is likely yes but there are a number of nuances. No one can tell you if you are a good candidate (or speak about individual risk!) until they have taken a complete medical history. While someone may be a great candidate for surgery, it doesn’t mean their insurance will pay for it. First you need to understand that insurance companies are always WAYYYYYYYYYYY behind the science of medicine. Your BMI is 37.9. If you are trying to use insurance to pay for surgery then they will…
Why do I have chronic diarrhea after my gastric bypass 12 years ago?
Diarrhea after remote gastric bypass
Oct 1, 2021
Oct 1, 2021
It’s very unlikely that your gastric bypass is the cause of the issue. There are many things that can cause diarrhea, most of which are not particularly dangerous. Definitely if it has been going on this long then it should be addressed by your physician. Generally stool studies and lab work are a good place to start. If you have not had a routine colonoscopy in 10 years (or 5 yr if a previous one showed polyps) then it would be wise to get one. Taking a probiotic can also help,…
How would a gastric bypass cause weight loss vs healthy eating already with exercise and no
Will bariatric surgery work for me?
May 27, 2015
May 27, 2015
Every patient I have ever seen has tried to lose weight on their own before they started thinking about surgery. In fact studies have shown that the average person considering bariatric surgery has tried at least 10 different times to lose weight on their own! So if they weren’t able to do it without surgery, why can they do it with surgery?????The answer lies in our body’s physiology. Your body is designed to try and keep your weight stable. It will always let you go…
How do bariatric surgeons feel about vegans?
Nothing But Love for the Vegan
Sep 2, 2014
Sep 2, 2014
I think most bariatric surgeons believe in good, sound nutrition, regardless of how you choose to get that nutrition in your body. Most of the vegans I know do not struggle with their weight so I have not treated a lot of them in my practice. I have had a handful of patients that have become vegans after their weight loss surgery and as long as they are mindful of getting in adequate protein (which can be challenging depending on how strict of a vegan they choose to be), can…
Can Gastric Bypass be reversed?
Reversing the “Irreversible” Operation
Jan 29, 2014
Jan 29, 2014
It is a common misperception that a gastric bypass can not be reversed. In fact, many people will choose a different operation because they have been told that a gastric bypass is “permanent” or “irreversible”. Having done it 5 times myself, I can assure you that it is ABSOLUTELY possible to reverse a gastric bypass! While it is possible to reverse a gastric bypass, it still remains exceeding unusual to come across a clinical situation that would require reversal…
Gastric Bypass and then a Pregnancy Diet?
Gastric Bypass and Pregnancy
Nov 17, 2011
Nov 17, 2011
As long as a patient is at least a year out from their weight loss surgery when they get pregnant, they should not have to change their diet during the pregnancy. As long as baby's growth is normal, mom does not need to gain a significant amount of weight during the pregnacy. The latest recommendations suggest that as little as 20 lbs can be gained during pregnancy and the baby is not affected. Where I see patients get in trouble is when they use the pregnancy as an…
Is a Gastric Sleeve a Good Option for Somebody Who is Overweight and Had a C-section?
To Sleeve or Not To Sleeve
Nov 17, 2011
Nov 17, 2011
In general, if someone is a good candidate for weight loss surgery they are a good candidate for any of the major procedures performed in the US (band, bypass, sleeve, BPD) and it really comes down to personal choice. I find that by the time a patient sees me they generally already know what they want. My job is to look at their chosen procedure and make sure from a medical standpoint it also makes sense and gives them the best chance at long-term success. I really believe…
