I’m 5’2” and 185lbs do I qualify for a gastric sleeve?
Hi there Chrystal
Jan 20, 2021
Hi Chrystal,
Based on the height and weight you provided, your BMI is between 33 and 34. That means you are just a point or two away from being considered morbid obese. Insurance won’t cover the procedure with your BMI not being over 35 or 40, but many patients choose to go the self-pay route to get the sleeve gastrectomy.
Is it possible or recommend to have gastric sleeve for my 36.31 BMI? I’m 5’3 and currently weigh in at 20
Yes……

Hi there ! Yes, a BMI 35 and over is considered morbid obese. It all depends if you are wanting insurance to cover your procedure, it could happen if it is a covered benefit. If you are wanting to go the self-pay route, you can typically have a sleeve procedure if you have a BMI over 30.
